The Sexual Response Cycle What is sexual response? It is described as the physical and emotional changes that occur in the body as men and women get sexually aroused during sexual activities such as intercourse and masturbation. The sexual response is characterized by vasocongestion and myotonia. Vasocongestion is the swelling of the genitals with blood. It causes the penis to erect and the area surrounding the vagina to swell. Myotonia is muscle tension. It causes facial grimaces, spasms in the hands and feet, and spasms of orgasms. The sexual response cycle has four phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. Both men and women experience these phases, although the timing usually is different. Men and women do not usually†¦show more content†¦The last phase of the sexual response cycle is the resolution phase. During this phase, the body returns to its normal level and all erect and swollen body parts return to their normal size. Unlike women, men enter a refractory period, which is a period of unresponsiveness to further sexual stimulation. During this time, men cannot have another orgasm or ejaculate. Women, however, can experience multiple orgasms and continue sexual stimulation. When a person knows how their body responds to sex, they have a greater chance of enhancing their relationship and pinpointing any sexual dysfunctions. Sexual dysfunctions are persistent problems in becoming sexually aroused or reaching an orgasm. Millions of Americans experience some type of sexual dysfunction.
